1. యోనా దీనిచూచి బహు చింతాక్రాంతుడై కోపగించుకొని

1. BUT IT displeased Jonah exceedingly and he was very angry.

2. యెహోవా, నేను నా దేశమందుండగా ఇట్లు జరుగునని నేననుకొంటిని గదా? అందు వలననే నీవు కటాక్షమును జాలియును బహు శాంతమును అత్యంత కృపయుగల దేవుడవై యుండి, పశ్చాత్తాపపడి కీడుచేయక మానుదువని నేను తెలిసికొని దానికి ముందు గానే తర్షీషునకు పారిపోతిని.

2. And he prayed to the Lord and said, I pray You, O Lord, is not this just what I said when I was still in my country? That is why I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness, and [when sinners turn to You and meet Your conditions] You revoke the [sentence of] evil against them. [Exod. 34:6.]

3. నేనిక బ్రదుకుటకంటె చచ్చుట మేలు; యెహోవా, నన్నిక బ్రదుకనియ్యక చంపుమని యెహోవాకు మనవి చేసెను.

3. Therefore now, O Lord, I beseech You, take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.

4. అందుకు యెహోవా నీవు కోపించుట న్యాయమా? అని యడిగెను.

4. Then said the Lord, Do you do well to be angry?

5. అప్పుడు యోనా ఆ పట్టణములోనుండి పోయి దాని తూర్పుతట్టున బసచేసి అచ్చట పందిలి యొకటి వేసికొని పట్టణమునకు ఏమి సంభవించునో చూచెదనని ఆ నీడను కూర్చుని యుండగా

5. So Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city, and he made a booth there for himself. He sat there under it in the shade till he might see what would become of the city.

6. దేవుడైన యెహోవా సొరచెట్టొకటి ఏర్పరచి అతనికి కలిగిన శ్రమ పోగొట్టుటకై అది పెరిగి యోనా తలకుపైగా నీడ యిచ్చునట్లు చేసెను; ఆ సొర చెట్టును చూచి యోనా బహు సంతోషించెను.

6. And the Lord God prepared a gourd and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his evil situation. So Jonah was exceedingly glad [to have the protection] of the gourd.

7. మరుసటి ఉదయమందు దేవుడు ఒక పురుగును ఏర్పరచగా అది ఆ చెట్టును తొలిచినందున చెట్టు వాడిపోయెను.

7. But God prepared a cutworm when the morning dawned the next day, and it smote the gourd so that it withered.

8. మరియు ఎండ కాయగా దేవుడు వేడిమిగల తూర్పుగాలిని రప్పిం చెను. యోనాతలకు ఎండ దెబ్బ తగలగా అతడు సొమ్మ సిల్లిబ్రదుకుటకంటె చచ్చుట నాకు మేలనుకొనెను.

8. And when the sun arose, God prepared a sultry east wind, and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah so that he fainted and wished in himself to die and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

9. అప్పుడు దేవుడుఈ సొరచెట్టును గురించి నీవు కోపించుట న్యాయమా? అని యోనాను అడుగగా యోనాప్రాణము పోవునంతగా కోపించుట న్యాయమే అనెను.

9. And God said to Jonah, Do you do well to be angry for the loss of the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, angry enough to die!

10. అందుకు యెహోవానీవు కష్టపడకుండను పెంచకుండను ఒక రాత్రిలోనే పుట్టి పెరిగి ఒక రాత్రిలో గానే వాడి పోయిన యీ సొరచెట్టు విషయములో నీవు విచారపడు చున్నావే;

10. Then said the Lord, You have had pity on the gourd, for which you have not labored nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night.

11. అయితే నూట ఇరువదివేలకంటె ఎక్కువై, కుడియెడమలు ఎరుగని జనమును బహు పశువులును గల నీనెవె మహాపురము విషయములో నేను విచారపడవద్దా? అని యోనాతో సెలవిచ్చెను.

11. And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons not [yet old enough to] know their right hand from their left, and also many cattle [not accountable for sin]?
