1. సౌలు ముప్పది ఏండ్లవాడై యేలనా రంభించెను. అతడు రెండు సంవత్సరములు ఇశ్రాయేలీయులను ఏలెను

1. Saul was as a child of a year old, when he began to reign. And when he had reigned two years over Israel,

2. he chose him three thousand men out of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in Machmas and mount Bethel, and a thousand with Jonathas in Gabaah Benjamin. And the rest of the people he sent, every man to his own house.

3. And Jonathas slew the Philistines in an hold they had in Gabaah, and it came to the Philistines' ears. And Saul caused the trumpet to be blown thorowout all the land saying: let the Hebrews hear.

4. సౌలు ఫిలిష్తీయుల దండును హతముచేసి నందున ఇశ్రాయేలీయులు ఫిలిష్తీయులకు హేయులైరని ఇశ్రాయేలీయులకు వినబడగా జనులు గిల్గా లులో సౌలు నొద్దకు కూడివచ్చిరి.

4. And all Israel heard say, how that Saul had destroyed an hold of the Philistines, and how that Israel stank unto the Philistines. And all the people cried after Saul to Gilgal.

5. ఫిలిష్తీయులు ఇశ్రాయేలీయులతో యుద్ధముచేయుటకై ముప్పదివేల రథములను ఆరువేల గుఱ్ఱపు రౌతులను సముద్రపుదరినుండు ఇసుకరేణువులంత విస్తారమైన జన సమూహమును సమకూర్చుకొని వచ్చిరి. వీరు బయలుదేరి బేతావెను తూర్పుదిక్కున మిక్మషులో దిగిరి.

5. Then the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and Six thousand horsemen with other people like the sand by the sea's side in multitude and came up and pitched in Michmas eastward from Bethaven.

6. ఇశ్రా యేలీయులు దిగులుపడుచు వచ్చి తాము ఇరుకులో నున్నట్టు తెలిసికొని గుహలలోను పొదలలోను మెట్టలలోను ఉన్నత స్థలములలోను కూపములలోను దాగిరి.

6. And when the men of Israel saw themselves in a strait, and that the people were acumbered, they hid themselves in caves, in privy holes, in rocks, dens and pits.

7. కొందరు హెబ్రీయులు యొర్దాను నది దాటి గాదుదేశ మునకును గిలాదునకును వెళ్లి పోయిరి గాని సౌలు ఇంకను గిల్గాలులోనే ఉండెను; జనులందరు భయపడుచు అతని వెంబడించిరి.

7. And the Hebrews went over Jordan unto the land of Gad and Gilead. But Saul was yet in Gilgal, and all the people that followed him were astonied.

8. సమూయేలు చెప్పినట్టు అతడు ఏడు దినములు ఆగి, సమూయేలు గిల్గాలునకు రాకపోవుటయు, జనులు తన యొద్దనుండి చెదరిపోవుటయు చూచి

8. And he tarried seven days, as Samuel had appointed. But Samuel came not to Gilgal, and the people scattered from him.

9. దహన బలులను సమాధానబలులను నా యొద్దకు తీసికొని రమ్మని చెప్పి దహనబలి అర్పించెను.

9. Wherefore Saul said: bring burnt sacrifice to me and peace offerings. And he offered burnt sacrifice.

10. అతడు దహనబలి అర్పించి చాలిం చిన వెంటనే సమూయేలు వచ్చెను. సౌలు అతనిని కలిసికొని అతనికి వందనము చేయుటకై బయలుదేరగా

10. And as soon as he had made an end of offering burnt offerings behold, Samuel came. And Saul went against him, to Salute him. Then said Samuel to Saul: what hast thou done?

11. సమూ యేలు అతనితోనీవు చేసిన పని యేమని యడిగెను. అందుకు సౌలుజనులు నాయొద్దనుండి చెదరిపోవుటయు, నిర్ణయకాలమున నీవు రాకపోవుటయు, ఫిలిష్తీయులు మిక్మషులో కూడియుండుటయు నేను చూచి

11. And Saul said, because I saw that the people scattered from me, and yet thou camest not within the days appointed and that the phlistines gathered themselves together to Machmas:

12. ఇంకను యెహోవాను శాంతిపరచకమునుపే ఫిలిష్తీయులు గిల్గాలునకు వచ్చి నామీద పడుదురనుకొని నా అంతట నేను సాహసించి దహనబలి అర్పించితిననెను.

12. then said I, the Philistines shall come down upon me to Gilgal, before I have made supplication unto the LORD. And therefore I took a courage with me and offered burnt offerings.

13. అందుకు సమూ యేలు ఇట్లనెనునీ దేవుడైన యెహోవా నీ కిచ్చిన ఆజ్ఞను గైకొనక నీవు అవివేకపు పని చేసితివి; నీ రాజ్యమునుఇశ్రాయేలీయులమీద సదాకాలము స్థిరపరచుటకు యెహోవా తలచి యుండెను; అయితే నీ రాజ్యము నిలు వదు.

13. Then said Samuel to Saul: thou hast done foolishly and hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God which he commanded thee. For at this time would the LORD have stablished thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

14. యెహోవా తన చిత్తానుసారమైన మనస్సుగల యొకని కనుగొనియున్నాడు. నీకు ఆజ్ఞాపించినదాని నీవు గైకొనకపోతివి గనుక యెహోవా తన జనులమీద అతనిని అధిపతినిగా నియమించును.

14. But now thy kingdom shall not continue. The LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and hath commanded him to be a captain over his people: because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

15. సమూయేలు లేచి గిల్గాలును విడిచి బెన్యామీనీయుల గిబియాకు వచ్చెను; సౌలు తనయొద్దనున్న జనులను లెక్క పెట్టగా వారు దాదాపు ఆరు వందలమంది యుండిరి.

15. And Samuel arose and gat him from Gilgal to Gabaah Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were found with him, about a six hundredth men.

16. సౌలును అతని కుమారుడైన యోనాతానును తమ దగ్గర నున్న వారితో కూడ బెన్యామీనీయుల గిబియాలో ఉండిరి; ఫిలిష్తీయులు మిక్మషులో దిగియుండిరి.

16. And Saul and Jonathas his son and the people that were found with them, had their abiding in Gabaah Benjamin. But the Philistines had pitched in Machmas.

17. మరియు ఫిలిష్తీ యుల పాళెములోనుండి దోపుడుగాండ్రు మూడుగుంపు లుగా బయలుదేరి ఒక గుంపు షూయాలు దేశమున, ఒఫ్రాకు పోవుమార్గమున సంచరించెను.

17. And there came out of the host of the Philistines three companies, to destroy: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ephrah unto the land of Sual.

18. రెండవ గుంపు బేత్‌ హోరోనుకు పోవుమార్గమున సంచరించెను. మూడవ గుంపు అరణ్య సమీపమందుండు జెబోయిములోయ సరి హద్దు మార్గమున సంచరించెను.

18. And another company turned the way to Bethoron. And the third company turned to the way of the coast that turneth to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

19. హెబ్రీయులు కత్తులను ఈటెలను చేయించుకొందు రేమో అని ఫిలిష్తీయులు ఇశ్రాయేలీయుల దేశమందంతట కమ్మరవాండ్రు లేకుండచేసియుండిరి.

19. But there was no smith thorowout the land of Israel. For the Philistines thought that then the Hebrews might make them swords or spears.

20. కాబట్టి ఇశ్రా యేలీయులందరు తమ నక్కులను పారలను గొడ్డండ్రను పోటకత్తులను పదును చేయించుటకై ఫిలిష్తీయులదగ్గరకు పోవలసి వచ్చెను.

20. And therefore must all Israel go down to the Philistines, to mend every man his share, his mattock, his axe or his sickle:

21. అయితే నక్కులకును పారలకును మూడు ముండ్లుగల కొంకులకును గొడ్డండ్రకును మునుకోల కఱ్ఱలు సరిచేయుటకును ఆకు రాళ్లుమాత్రము వారియొద్ద నుండెను.

21. as oft as the edges of the sickles, mattocks, dung forks, and axes were blunt, and also to mend their goods.

22. కాబట్టి యుద్ధదినమందు సౌలునొద్దను యోనా తాను నొద్దను ఉన్నజనులలోఒకని చేతిలోనైనను కత్తియే గాని యీటెయేగాని లేకపోయెను, సౌలునకును అతని కుమారుడైన యోనాతానునకును మాత్రము అవి యుండెను.

22. And so in time of battle there was neither sword nor spear found in the hands of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathas: save for Saul and Jonathas his son was there somewhat found.

23. ఫిలిష్తీయుల దండు కావలివారు కొందరు మిక్మషు కనుమకు వచ్చిరి.

23. And the Garrison of the Philistines came out and stood on the other side before Machmas.
