1. ప్రేమ కలిగియుండుటకు ప్రయాసపడుడి. ఆత్మ సంబంధమైన వరములను ఆసక్తితో అపేక్షించుడి; విశేషముగా మీరు ప్రవచనవరము అపేక్షించుడి.

1. EAGERLY PURSUE and seek to acquire [this] love [make it your aim, your great quest]; and earnestly desire and cultivate the spiritual endowments (gifts), especially that you may prophesy (interpret the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching).

2. ఎందుకనగా భాషతో మాటలాడువాడు మనుష్యులతో కాదు దేవునితో మాటలాడుచున్నాడు; మనుష్యుడెవడును గ్రహింపడుగాని వాడు ఆత్మవలన మర్మములను పలుకు చున్నాడు.

2. For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding].

3. క్షేమాభివృద్ధియు హెచ్చరికయు ఆదరణయు కలుగునట్లు, ప్రవచించువాడు మనుష్యులతో మాట లాడుచున్నాడు.

3. But [on the other hand], the one who prophesies [who interprets the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching] speaks to men for their upbuilding and constructive spiritual progress and encouragement and consolation.

4. భాషతో మాటలాడువాడు తనకే క్షేమాభివృద్ధి కలుగజేసికొనును గాని ప్రవచించువాడు సంఘమునకు క్షేమాభివృద్ధి కలుగజేయును.

4. He who speaks in a [strange] tongue edifies and improves himself, but he who prophesies [interpreting the divine will and purpose and teaching with inspiration] edifies and improves the church and promotes growth [in Christian wisdom, piety, holiness, and happiness].

5. మీరందరు భాషలతో మాటలాడవలెనని కోరుచున్నానుగాని మీరు ప్రవచింపవలెనని మరి విశేషముగా కోరుచున్నాను. సంఘము క్షేమాభివృద్ధి పొందునిమిత్తము భాషలతో మాట లాడువాడు అర్థము చెప్పితేనేగాని వానికంటె ప్రవచించువాడే శ్రేష్ఠుడు.

5. Now I wish that you might all speak in [unknown] tongues, but more especially [I want you] to prophesy (to be inspired to preach and interpret the divine will and purpose). He who prophesies [who is inspired to preach and teach] is greater (more useful and more important) than he who speaks in [unknown] tongues, unless he should interpret [what he says], so that the church may be edified and receive good [from it].

6. సహోదరులారా, ఆలోచించుడి; భాషలతో మాటలాడుచు నేను మీయొద్దకు వచ్చి సత్యమును బయలు పరచవలెననియైనను జ్ఞానోపదేశము చేయ వలెనని యైనను ప్రవచింపవలెననియైనను బోధింపవలెనని యైనను మీతో మాటలాడకపోయిన యెడల, నావలన మీకు ప్రయోజనమేమి?

6. Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in [unknown] tongues, how shall I make it to your advantage unless I speak to you either in revelation (disclosure of God's will to man) in knowledge or in prophecy or in instruction?

7. పిల్లనగ్రోవి గాని వీణ గాని, నిర్జీవ వస్తువులు నాదమిచ్చునప్పుడు, స్వరములలో భేదము కలుగజేయనియెడల, ఊదినదేదో మీటినదేదో యేలాగు తెలియును?

7. If even inanimate musical instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone [listening] know or understand what is played?

8. మరియు బూర స్పష్టముకాని ధ్వని ఇచ్చు నప్పుడు యుద్ధమునకెవడు సిద్ధపడును?

8. And if the war bugle gives an uncertain (indistinct) call, who will prepare for battle?

9. ఆలాగే మీరు స్పష్టమైన మాటలు నాలుకతో పలికితేనేగాని పలికినది ఏలాగు తెలియును? మీరు గాలితో మాటలాడు చున్నట్టుందురు.

9. Just so it is with you; if you in the [unknown] tongue speak words that are not intelligible, how will anyone understand what you are saying? For you will be talking into empty space!

10. లోకమందు ఎన్నో విధములగు భాషలున్నను వాటిలో ఒకటైనను స్పష్టముకానిదై యుండదు.

10. There are, I suppose, all these many [to us unknown] tongues in the world [somewhere], and none is destitute of [its own power of] expression and meaning.

11. మాటల అర్థము నాకు తెలియకుండిన యెడల మాటలాడు వానికి నేను పరదేశినిగా ఉందును, మాటలాడువాడు నాకు పరదేశిగా ఉండును.

11. But if I do not know the force and significance of the speech (language), I shall seem to be a foreigner to the one who speaks [to me], and the speaker who addresses [me] will seem a foreigner to me.

12. మీరు ఆత్మసంబంధమైన వరముల విషయమై ఆసక్తిగలవారు గనుక సంఘమునకు క్షేమాభివృద్ధి కలుగునిమిత్తము అవి మీకు విస్తరించునట్లు ప్రయత్నము చేయుడి.

12. So it is with yourselves; since you are so eager and ambitious to possess spiritual endowments and manifestations of the [Holy] Spirit, [concentrate on] striving to excel and to abound [in them] in ways that will build up the church.

13. భాషతో మాటలాడువాడు అర్థము చెప్పు శక్తికలుగుటకై ప్రార్థనచేయవలెను.

13. Therefore, the person who speaks in an [unknown] tongue should pray [for the power] to interpret and explain what he says.

14. నేను భాషతో ప్రార్థన చేసినయెడల నా ఆత్మ ప్రార్థనచేయును గాని నా మనస్సు ఫలవంతముగా ఉండదు.

14. For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit [by the Holy Spirit within me] prays, but my mind is unproductive [it bears no fruit and helps nobody].

15. కాబట్టి ఆత్మతో ప్రార్థన చేతును, మనస్సుతోను ప్రార్థన చేతును; ఆత్మతో పాడుదును, మనస్సుతోను పాడుదును.

15. Then what am I to do? I will pray with my spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me], but I will also pray [intelligently] with my mind and understanding; I will sing with my spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me], but I will sing [intelligently] with my mind and understanding also.

16. లేనియెడల నీవు ఆత్మతో స్తోత్రము చేసినప్పుడు ఉపదేశము పొందనివాడు నీవు చెప్పుదానిని గ్రహింపలేడు గనుక, నీవు కృతజ్ఞతాస్తుతులు చెల్లించినప్పుడు ఆమేన్‌ అని వాడేలాగు పలుకును?

16. Otherwise, if you bless and render thanks with [your] spirit [thoroughly aroused by the Holy Spirit], how can anyone in the position of an outsider or he who is not gifted with [interpreting of unknown] tongues, say the Amen to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? [I Chron. 16:36; Ps. 106:48.]

17. నీవైతే బాగుగానే కృతజ్ఞతాస్తుతులు చెల్లించుచున్నావు గాని యెదుటివాడు క్షేమాభివృద్ధి పొందడు.

17. To be sure, you may give thanks well (nobly), but the bystander is not edified [it does him no good].

18. నేను మీ యందరికంటె ఎక్కువగా భాషలతో మాటలాడుచున్నాను; అందుకు దేవుని స్తుతించెదను.

18. I thank God that I speak in [strange] tongues (languages) more than any of you or all of you put together;

19. అయినను సంఘములో భాషతో పదివేల మాటలు పలుకుటకంటె, ఇతరులకు బోధకలుగునట్లు నా మనస్సుతో అయిదు మాటలు పలుకుట మేలు.

19. Nevertheless, in public worship, I would rather say five words with my understanding and intelligently in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a [strange] tongue (language).

20. సహోదరులారా, మీరు బుద్ధివిషయమై పసిపిల్లలు కాక దుష్టత్వము విషయమై శిశువులుగా ఉండుడి; బుద్ధి విషయమై పెద్దవారలై యుండుడి.

20. Brethren, do not be children [immature] in your thinking; continue to be babes in [matters of] evil, but in your minds be mature [men].

21. అన్య భాషలు మాటలాడు జనులద్వారాను, పరజనుల పెదవులద్వారాను, ఈ జనులతో మాటలాడుదును; అప్పటికైనను వారు నా మాట వినకపోదురు అని ప్రభువు చెప్పుచున్నాడని ధర్మశాస్త్రములో వ్రాయ బడియున్నది.

21. It is written in the Law, By men of strange languages and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and not even then will they listen to Me, says the Lord. [Isa. 28:11, 12.]

22. కాబట్టి భాషలు విశ్వాసులకు కాదు అవిశ్వాసులకే సూచకమైయున్నవి. ప్రవచించుట అవిశ్వాసులకు కాదు విశ్వాసులకే సూచకమై యున్నది.

22. Thus [unknown] tongues are meant for a [supernatural] sign, not for believers but for unbelievers [on the point of believing], while prophecy (inspired preaching and teaching, interpreting the divine will and purpose) is not for unbelievers [on the point of believing] but for believers.

23. సంఘమంతయు ఏకముగా కూడి అందరు భాషలతో మాటలాడుచుండగా, ఉపదేశము పొందనివారైనను అవి శ్వాసులైనను లోపలికి వచ్చినయెడల, మీరు వెఱ్ఱిమాట లాడుచున్నారని అనుకొందురు కదా?

23. Therefore, if the whole church assembles and all of you speak in [unknown] tongues, and the ungifted and uninitiated or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are demented?

24. అయితే అందరు ప్రవచించుచుండగా అవిశ్వాసియైనను ఉపదేశము పొందని వాడైనను లోపలికి వచ్చినయెడల, అందరి బోధవలన తాను పాపినని గ్రహించి, అందరివలన విమర్శింపబడును.

24. But if all prophesy [giving inspired testimony and interpreting the divine will and purpose] and an unbeliever or untaught outsider comes in, he is told of his sin and reproved and convicted and convinced by all, and his defects and needs are examined (estimated, determined) and he is called to account by all,

25. అప్పుడతని హృదయరహస్యములు బయలుపడును. ఇందు వలన దేవుడు నిజముగా మీలో ఉన్నాడని ప్రచురముచేయుచు అతడు సాగిలపడి దేవునికి నమస్కారము చేయును.

25. The secrets of his heart are laid bare; and so, falling on [his] face, he will worship God, declaring that God is among you in very truth.

26. సహోదరులారా, యిప్పుడు మీలో ఏమి జరుగు చున్నది? మీరు కూడి వచ్చునప్పుడు ఒకడు ఒక కీర్తన పాడవలెనని యున్నాడు; మరియొకడు బోధింపవలెనని యున్నాడు; మరియొకడు తనకు బయలు పరచబడినది ప్రకటనచేయవలెనని యున్నాడు; మరియొకడు భాషతో మాటలాడవలెనని యున్నాడు; మరియొకడు అర్థము చెప్ప వలెనని యున్నాడు. సరే; సమస్తమును క్షేమాభివృద్ధి కలుగుటకై జరుగనియ్యుడి.

26. What then, brethren, is [the right course]? When you meet together, each one has a hymn, a teaching, a disclosure of special knowledge or information, an utterance in a [strange] tongue, or an interpretation of it. [But] let everything be constructive and edifying and for the good of all.

27. భాషతో ఎవడైనను మాటలాడితే, ఇద్దరు అవసరమైన యెడల ముగ్గురికి మించకుండ, వంతులచొప్పున మాటలాడవలెను, ఒకడు అర్థము చెప్ప వలెను.

27. If some speak in a [strange] tongue, let the number be limited to two or at the most three, and each one [taking his] turn, and let one interpret and explain [what is said].

28. అర్థము చెప్పువాడు లేనియెడల అతడు సంఘములో మౌనముగా ఉండవలెను గాని, తనతోను దేవునితోను మాటలాడుకొనవచ్చును.

28. But if there is no one to do the interpreting, let each of them keep still in church and talk to himself and to God.

29. ప్రవక్తలు ఇద్దరు ముగ్గురు మాటలాడవచ్చును; తక్కినవారు వివేచింపవలెను.

29. So let two or three prophets speak [those inspired to preach or teach], while the rest pay attention and weigh and discern what is said.

30. అయితే కూర్చున్న మరి యొకనికి ఏదైనను బయలు పరచబడిన యెడల మొదటివాడు మౌనముగా ఉండవలెను.

30. But if an inspired revelation comes to another who is sitting by, then let the first one be silent.

31. అందరు నేర్చుకొనునట్లును అందరు హెచ్చరిక పొందునట్లును మీరందరు ఒకని తరువాత ఒకడు ప్రవచింపవచ్చును.

31. For in this way you can give testimony [prophesying and thus interpreting the divine will and purpose] one by one, so that all may be instructed and all may be stimulated and encouraged;

32. మరియు ప్రవక్తల ఆత్మలు ప్రవక్తల స్వాధీనములో ఉన్నవి.

32. For the spirits of the prophets (the speakers in tongues) are under the speaker's control [and subject to being silenced as may be necessary],

33. ఆలాగే పరిశుద్ధుల సంఘము లన్నిటిలో దేవుడు సమాధానమునకే కర్త గాని అల్లరికి కర్త కాడు.

33. For He [Who is the source of their prophesying] is not a God of confusion and disorder but of peace and order. As [is the practice] in all the churches of the saints (God's people),

34. స్త్రీలు సంఘములలో మౌనముగా ఉండవలెను; వారు లోబడియుండవలసినదే గాని, మాటలాడుటకు వారికి సెలవు లేదు. ఈలాగు ధర్మశాస్త్రమును చెప్పుచున్నది.

34. The women should keep quiet in the churches, for they are not authorized to speak, but should take a secondary and subordinate place, just as the Law also says. [Gen. 3:16.]

35. వారు ఏమైనను నేర్చుకొనగోరిన యెడల, ఇంట తమ తమ భర్తల నడుగవలెను; సంఘములో స్త్రీ మాటలాడుట అవమానము.

35. But if there is anything they want to learn, they should ask their own husbands at home, for it is disgraceful for a woman to talk in church [for her to usurp and exercise authority over men in the church].

36. దేవుని వాక్యము మీ యొద్ద నుండియే బయలువెళ్లెనా? మీయొద్దకు మాత్రమే వచ్చెనా?

36. What! Did the word of the Lord originate with you [Corinthians], or has it reached only you?

37. ఎవడైనను తాను ప్రవక్తననియైనను ఆత్మసంబంధినని యైనను తలంచుకొనిన యెడల, నేను మీకు వ్రాయుచున్నవి ప్రభువుయొక్క ఆజ్ఞలని అతడు దృఢముగా తెలిసికొనవలెను.

37. If anyone thinks and claims that he is a prophet [filled with and governed by the Holy Spirit of God and inspired to interpret the divine will and purpose in preaching or teaching] or has any other spiritual endowment, let him understand (recognize and acknowledge) that what I am writing to you is a command of the Lord.

38. ఎవడైనను తెలియని వాడైతే తెలియని వాడుగానే యుండనిమ్ము.

38. But if anyone disregards or does not recognize [that it is a command of the Lord], he is disregarded and not recognized [he is one whom God knows not].

39. కాబట్టి నా సహోదరులారా, ప్రవచించుట ఆసక్తితో అపేక్షించుడి, భాషలతో మాటలాడుట ఆటంకపరచకుడి గాని,

39. So [to conclude], my brethren, earnestly desire and set your hearts on prophesying (on being inspired to preach and teach and to interpret God's will and purpose), and do not forbid or hinder speaking in [unknown] tongues.

40. సమస్తమును మర్యాదగాను క్రమముగాను జరుగ నియ్యుడి.

40. But all things should be done with regard to decency and propriety and in an orderly fashion.
