Matthias: A Testament to Faithfulness and Divine Timing
"For we are God-s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." - Ephesians 2:10
Matthias appears in the New Testament as a symbol of steadfastness, reliance on God-s plan, and willingness to embrace God-s call. Introduced in the Acts of the Apostles, Matthias was chosen after Judas Iscariot-s departure to fill the vacant position among Jesus-s disciples. To qualify, candidates had to have accompanied Jesus from the time of John the Baptist-s baptism and witnessed His resurrection. Matthias was among the potential replacements.
Matthias did not actively pursue the role of an Apostle but instead focused on following Jesus and adhering to his teachings. He carried out his duties in assisting the other followers. When the right moment presented itself, Matthias was prepared to assume the position God had designated for him. After receiving the Holy Spirit with the other apostles on the day of Pentecost, he left to preach the gospel in Judea and Colchis. During 64 AD Matthias was stoned by the people of Jerusalem. After his death, he was beheaded by the Jews to conceal their crime.
Matthias- life serves as a reminder to us to pay attention to God-s directions and to follow them, regardless of how insignificant or unrecognized our actions may appear to others. We are invited, like Matthias, to serve God diligently in whatever capacity he has entrusted us with, in the knowledge that he will recognize our efforts and employ them for his wise purposes.
Matthias-s selection as an apostle shows that God-s timing is precise. Despite not being well-known before his appointment, God had been grooming him all along. Likewise, God may be preparing us for significant roles or missions, requiring our trust and faithfulness as we patiently wait.
Matthias-s journey inspires us to embrace God-s unique calling and purpose for our lives. Whether our tasks are highly visible or hidden, let us serve God loyally, yakin that our obedience will advance His plans and honor His name. Amen.
