1. సౌలు ఫిలిష్తీయులను తరుముట మాని తిరిగిరాగా దావీదు ఏన్గెదీ అరణ్యమందున్నాడని అతనికి వర్తమానము వచ్చెను.

1. When Saul came back from fighting the Philistines, he was told that David was in the wilderness near Engedi.

2. అప్పుడు సౌలు ఇశ్రాయేలీయులందరిలోనుండి మూడు వేలమందిని ఏర్పరచుకొని వచ్చి, కొండమేకలకు వాసములగు శిలాపర్వతములమీద దావీదును అతని జనులను వెదకుటకై బయలుదేరెను.

2. Saul took three thousand of the best soldiers in Israel and went looking for David and his men east of Wild Goat Rocks.

3. మార్గముననున్న గొఱ్ఱె దొడ్లకు అతడు రాగా అక్కడ గుహ యొకటి కనబడెను. అందులో సౌలు శంకానివర్తికి పోగా దావీదును అతని జనులును ఆ గుహ లోపలిభాగములలో ఉండిరి గనుక

3. He came to a cave close to some sheep pens by the road and went in to relieve himself. It happened to be the very cave in which David and his men were hiding far back in the cave.

4. దావీదు జనులు అదిగోనీ దృష్టికి ఏది మంచిదో అది నీవు అతనికి చేయునట్లు నీ శత్రువుని నీ చేతికి అప్పగింతు నని యెహోవా నీతో చెప్పిన దినము వచ్చెనని అతనితో అనగా; దావీదు లేచి వచ్చి సౌలునకు తెలియకుండ అతని పైవస్త్రపు చెంగును కోసెను.

4. They said to him, 'This is your chance! The LORD has told you that he would put your enemy in your power and you could do to him whatever you wanted to.' David crept over and cut off a piece of Saul's robe without Saul's knowing it.

5. సౌలు పైవస్త్రమును తాను కోసెనని దావీదు మనస్సు నొచ్చి

5. But then David's conscience began to hurt,

6. ఇతడు యెహోవాచేత అభిషేకము నొందినవాడు గనుక యెహోవాచేత అభిషిక్తుడైన నా ప్రభువునకు నేను ఈ కార్యము చేయను, యెహోవానుబట్టి అతని నేను చంపను అని తన జనులతో చెప్పెను.

6. and he said to his men, 'May the LORD keep me from doing any harm to my master, whom the LORD chose as king! I must not harm him in the least, because he is the king chosen by the LORD!'

7. ఈ మాటలు చెప్పి దావీదు తన జనులను అడ్డగించి సౌలు మీదికి పోనియ్యక వారిని ఆపెను. తరువాత సౌలు లేచి గుహలోనుండి బయలువెళ్లి మార్గమున పోయెను.

7. So David convinced his men that they should not attack Saul. Saul got up, left the cave, and started away.

8. అప్పుడు దావీదు లేచి గుహలోనుండి బయలువెళ్లినా యేలినవాడా రాజా, అని సౌలు వెనుకనుండి కేక వేయగా సౌలు వెనుక చూచెను. దావీదు నేల సాష్టాంగ పడి నమస్కారము చేసి

8. Then David went out after him and called to him, 'Your Majesty!' Saul turned around, and David bowed down to the ground in respect

9. సౌలుతో ఇట్లనెనుదావీదు నీకు కీడుచేయనుద్దే శించుచున్నాడని జనులు చెప్పిన మాటలు నీవెందుకు విను చున్నావు?

9. and said, 'Why do you listen to people who say that I am trying to harm you?

10. ఆలోచించుము; ఈ దినమున యెహోవా నిన్ను ఏలాగు గుహలో నాచేతికి అప్పగించెనో అది నీ కండ్లార చూచితివే; కొందరు నిన్ను చంపుమని నాతో చెప్పినను నేను నీయందు కనికరించిఇతడు యెహోవాచేత అభిషేకము నొందినవాడు గనుక నా యేలినవాని చంపనని నేను చెప్పితిని.

10. You can see for yourself that just now in the cave the LORD put you in my power. Some of my men told me to kill you, but I felt sorry for you and said that I would not harm you in the least, because you are the one whom the LORD chose to be king.

11. నా తండ్రీ చూడుము, ఇదిగో, చూడుము. నిన్ను చంపక నీ వస్త్రపుచెంగు మాత్రమే కోసితిని గనుక నావలన నీకు కీడు ఎంతమాత్రుును రాదనియు, నాలో తప్పిదము ఎంతమాత్రమును లేదనియు, నీవు తెలిసికొనవచ్చును. నీ విషయమై నేను ఏపాపమును చేయనివాడనై యుండగా నీవు నా ప్రాణము తీయవలెనని నన్ను తరుముచున్నావు.

11. Look, my father, look at the piece of your robe I am holding! I could have killed you, but instead I only cut this off. This should convince you that I have no thought of rebelling against you or of harming you. You are hunting me down to kill me, even though I have not done you any wrong.

12. నీకును నాకును మధ్య యెహోవా న్యాయము తీర్చును. యెహోవా నా విషయమై పగతీర్చునుగాని నేను నిన్ను చంపను.

12. May the LORD judge which one of us is wrong! May he punish you for your action against me, for I will not harm you in the least.

13. పూర్వికులు సామ్యము చెప్పినట్టు దుష్టుల చేతనే దౌష్ట్యము పుట్టునుగాని నేను నిన్ను చంపను.

13. You know the old saying, 'Evil is done only by evil people.' And so I will not harm you.

14. ఇశ్రాయేలీయుల రాజు ఎవని పట్టుకొన బయలుదేరి వచ్చి యున్నాడు? ఏపాటివానిని తరుముచున్నాడు? చచ్చిన కుక్కనుగదా? మిన్నల్లిని గదా?

14. Look at what the king of Israel is trying to kill! Look at what he is chasing! A dead dog, a flea!

15. యెహోవా నీకును నాకును మధ్య న్యాయాధిపతియై తీర్పు తీర్చునుగాక; ఆయనే సంగతి విచారించి నా పక్షమున వ్యాజ్యెమాడి నీ వశము కాకుండ నన్ను నిర్దోషినిగా తీర్చునుగాక.

15. The LORD will judge, and he will decide which one of us is wrong. May he look into the matter, defend me, and save me from you.'

16. దావీదు ఈ మాటలు సౌలుతో మాటలాడి చాలింపగా సౌలుదావీదా నాయనా, ఈ పలుకు నీదేనా అని బిగ్గరగా ఏడ్చి

16. When David had finished speaking, Saul said, 'Is that really you, David my son?' And he started crying.

17. దావీదుతో ఇట్లనెను - యెహోవా నన్ను నీచేతి కప్పగింపగా నన్ను చంపక విడిచినందుకు

17. Then he said to David, 'You are right, and I am wrong. You have been so good to me, while I have done such wrong to you!

18. ఈ దినమున నీవు నా అపకారమునకు ఉపకారముచేసిన వాడవై, నా యెడల నీకున్న ఉపకారబుద్ధిని వెల్లడిచేసితివి గనుక నీవు నాకంటె నీతిపరుడవు.

18. Today you have shown how good you are to me, because you did not kill me, even though the LORD put me in your power.

19. ఒకనికి తన శత్రువు దొరికినయెడల మేలుచేసి పంపివేయునా? ఈ దినమున నీవు నాకు చేసినదానినిబట్టి యెహోవా ప్రతిగా నీకు మేలు చేయునుగాక.

19. How often does someone catch an enemy and then let him get away unharmed? The LORD bless you for what you have done to me today!

20. నిశ్చయముగా నీవు రాజ వగుదువనియు, ఇశ్రాయేలీయుల రాజ్యము నీకు స్థిరపరచ బడుననియు నాకు తెలియును.

20. Now I am sure that you will be king of Israel and that the kingdom will continue under your rule.

21. కాబట్టి నా తరువాత నా సంతతివారిని నీవు నిర్మూలము చేయకుండునట్లును, నా తండ్రి ఇంటిలోనుండి నా పేరు నీవు కొట్టివేయ కుండునట్లును యెహోవా నామమున నాకు ప్రమాణము చేయుము. అంతట దావీదు సౌలునకు ప్రమాణము చేసెను

21. But promise me in the LORD's name that you will spare my descendants, so that my name and my family's name will not be completely forgotten.'

22. అప్పుడు సౌలు ఇంటికి తిరిగి వచ్చెను; అయితే దావీదును అతని జనులును తమ కొండస్థలములకు వెళ్లి పోయిరి.

22. David promised that he would. Then Saul went back home, and David and his men went back to their hiding place.
